I live in New York’s Hudson Valley with my husband Gary and our two beautiful kids. Gary and I bought a house in spring 2015 when it was decided my mom would be moving in with us. We found a split entry raised ranch that needed some fixing but was in our budget.
Before we bought the house, Gary had some wood working knowledge he picked up from his grandpa. I knew some basics of home maintenance that I picked up as a kid helping my stepfather. Neither of us had any real training in anything. But we know how to research and google and follow YouTube videos.
The house was built in 1983 and was used as a rental by the previous owners. They left lots of projects for us – like replacing all of the doors since EVERY door in the house had a hole in it. As money allows, we are slowly making repairs and improvements while keeping our toddler and baby out of our tools.
Our goal is to make this home more comfortable for our family of five plus one (we also have a girl from church living with us).
Every project seems to take longer and cost more than we plan. We also tend to be surprised by a lot of things — like live wires hiding in the wall from the previous owner. I guess that’s just the life a DIYer.
Thanks for visiting and following along with our adventures — good and bad.
