So here it is, an introduction to our house in all it’s wonderful mess.
We bought this place in the spring of 2015. It was not our first choice — we had a couple of offers on short sales fall through. But while this wasn’t the first choice, it wasn’t the worst of the options either. All of the places we looked at required some work to fit our budget and our family, which included my husband and I, one child, my mother on the way from Texas, and one girl in her early 20s from our church that has been living with us.
My husband and I had never planned to purchase a home – we were perfectly content with renting an apartment. But the rent for 3-bedroom apartments in New York’s Hudson Valley are ridiculous (starting at $2,100!!!) and we would probably need a 4-bedroom. We simply couldn’t afford to pay that every month. We figured purchasing a house – even one that needed fixing – would be cheaper in the long run and we could do the fixes as money came in.
So without further delay, here are the pictures from the real estate listing. Warning – they aren’t pretty.
With pictures like this, it’s no great surprise that this house sat on the market for seven months.
We have lots of plans for this place: obviously a kitchen remodel, we want to tear down the walls between the family room and kitchen, redo the bathroom, replace doors, add storage, replace windows, paint, replace the dangerous deck, and make the outside pretty, among other things.
Here we go.
