I knew we needed a new bathroom vanity cabinet. Water damage had eaten away the inside floor of the cabinet and bubbled the exterior side facing the toilet. I thought about just cutting some plywood and repairing the bottom and getting a piece of beadboard to attach to the side. In fact, several times I had a piece of beadboard in my hand at Lowes but put it back before checking out.
The bottom line was that I just don’t like this cabinet.
I don’t like the style of the doors – which I know I could build (or have hubby build) new ones. I also don’t like the fact that it’s not real wood, and I want drawers. So while I could repair and make this look decent – it will take time and money and it still won’t be what I want.
That meant I was on the hunt for a new one. The big box stores will have sales on bathroom vanities, but their sales still put a vanity cabinet between $200 and $300. That’s money we just don’t have. I looked at couple of the floor models that were being sold “as is,” but while the price was right at about $100, they were falling apart in the store.
I looked at the ready-to-assemble cabinets online (which is what we did for our kitchen cabinets – read about that here). But shipping is crazy expensive for just one cabinet.
Craigslist was my other option. About once a week, I would do a search for “vanity” and see what popped up. I got a lot of hits for beautiful new cabinets for $300 to $400 or beat up pieces that look as bad as the one I want to replace.
This searching of store ads and Craigslist went on for a year. Finally, I saw an ad on Craigslist for a brand new vanity for $20. It was never installed. The owner just changed his mind on the style he wanted. It’s a medium wood color (maybe cherry?) which is not what I was looking for, BUT it was $20! The only problem was that hubby and I were going out of town and wouldn’t be able to pick it up right away. So I didn’t call. I was kicking myself all weekend. That was until we got home and I saw the owner had dropped the price to $10!!!
We packed the kids in the car and went down to pick it up on one of the worst icy weather days we have had this year, but we got my vanity for $10.
It’s now sitting in my garage until we get a couple of days to work in the bathroom.
I’m also debating what color to paint it. I originally thought a white vanity would keep the room light. But I sure do like the look of a black vanity.
At this point, I think I’m going to experiment with the black. It’s just paint, right?
